Why adopt a senior cat?

Why adopt a senior cat?
Meet Avi, a made-up 12-year-old village cat: seven good reasons to adopt an older cat, what changes as cats age, and how to help an older rescue settle in

Meet Avi. He's twelve, he's ginger, he has a grey muzzle and he runs his village. He's also made up: we drew him to show you something real. Older cats are some of the easiest, kindest companions you'll ever share a sofa with, and they're often the last to be chosen.

When is a cat "senior"?

Vets generally start calling a cat senior somewhere around 10 to 11 years old. Many cats live well into their mid-to-late teens, so a "senior" cat can easily have years of sofa time ahead.

7 good reasons to adopt an older cat

1. What you see is what you get. A kitten's personality is a surprise. An adult cat's personality is already there: cuddly, independent, chatty or quiet. You can choose a cat who fits your home.

2. They're calm. Fewer 3 a.m. zoomies, fewer climbing expeditions, more long naps in the sun.

3. They usually know the basics. Most older cats already use the litter tray and know what a scratching post is for.

4. Your curtains will survive. See point 2.

5. They're great for quieter homes. Older cats often suit people who work from home, retired people, or anyone who wants a gentle companion rather than a tiny tornado.

6. They're often overlooked. Kittens get adopted fast. Older cats tend to wait much longer, so adopting one makes a real difference.

7. They're grateful. No study needed for this one. Ask anyone who has adopted a senior.

What changes as cats get older

Older cats need a little more attention, not a different life.

  • Check-ups: a vet visit about twice a year helps catch common age-related problems early, like kidney, thyroid and dental issues.
  • Joints: stiffness is common. Ramps or steps to favourite spots, and a litter tray with a low side, make a big difference. Our guide to arthritis in cats explains the signs.
  • Water: keep fresh water easy to reach. Some older cats drink more from a fountain or a wide bowl.
  • Weight and appetite: watch for changes either way. Eating more but losing weight can be a sign of thyroid problems.
  • Warmth and routine: a soft bed in a warm, quiet spot and a predictable day.

Helping an older rescue settle in

Give them a quiet room to start, with food, water, a litter tray and a hiding place. Let them come to you. Older rescues have often had a long story before they meet you, and trust can take a little time. That's exactly how we work at Mumcat: we let the cat set the pace.

The older cats at Mumcat

We specialise in the cats other people pass over: the shy, the grumpy, the older and the ones with special needs. Avi is made up. The older cats waiting with us are very real.
