Adopt a cat from Spain
Everything you need to know about adopting one of our rescued street cats — whether you live down the road in Catalonia or a long drive away in Germany.
Why adopt a Spanish rescue cat?
In the Spanish countryside, cat populations are largely uncontrolled. Many cats live close to people, surviving on leftovers and a quick hunt. Spanish law now requires domestic animals to be microchipped and sterilised, but in matters of cats, mentalities haven't caught up yet.
Many of our cats come from exactly this kind of place. They are perfectly adapted to life outdoors — but a life free from pregnancies, territorial fights and outdated attitudes is a better one. Adopting one of them gives that cat a home and frees a spot for the next one waiting on the street.
Mumcatorg is a registered Spanish non-profit (NIF G-72681257), founded on 22 October 2022. The rescue work itself started back in 2011. We are based in La Floresta, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, and care for around 25 cats every day.
We specialise in the "unadoptables"
Shy cats, grumpy cats, older cats, cats with special needs. What we are good at is building a trusting relationship with cats that have spent their lives on the streets. We give them time and let them decide the pace, the distance and the conditions they feel comfortable with.
That means we know our cats well. By the time a cat is ready for adoption, we can tell you honestly how it gets along with other cats, how it reacts to visitors, what it loves and what it will not tolerate. Use our cat matcher to find a cat by personality and needs.
The adoption process, step by step
- Meet online. Fill in our adoption questionnaire. We read it personally, then share videos and talk about the cat's character.
- Health check. The cat is tested for FeLV and FIV, dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
- Passport and travel. For adoptions abroad, the cat gets its EU pet passport and the last shot: rabies.
- Welcome home. Your cat arrives with its passport and a behavioural note — and we stay in touch for life.
Health preparation
Before a cat is spayed or neutered, the vet runs blood work to detect disease — for example, whether the cat is positive for FeLV or FIV. All cats that come indoors are microchipped and vaccinated. Cats older than six months are sterilised before adoption.
A cat's health history matters enormously to us. Future adopters learn about everything detected during the medical exams: not only FeLV or FIV status, but also calicivirus, herpesvirus or any other virus found in the cat or its siblings. Total transparency is crucial for the cat's future health.
The EU pet passport and travel
When a cat goes to a home abroad, we pay for the passport and the rabies vaccine. In general terms, cats travelling between EU countries need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport issued by a vet. Requirements can change, so we check the current rules for your country with our vet before every trip.
A long trip is not fun for any cat, and we don't take it lightly. It is only worth it if the cat is going to a definitive home, cared for from day one to its last. That is why we take our time with every adopter.
A real story: Max goes to Germany
Max was bottle-fed, very talkative and, in his own way, a big baby. He was adopted in September 2023 by a lovely woman in Germany. In the middle of his preparation we discovered he was FIV-positive. It didn't change her mind. We did further tests, a dental clean and a course of antibiotics and vitamins — and on 13 October, Max set off on his long trip. Read Max's adoption story.
After arrival
Every cat arrives with an up-to-date passport and a behavioural note. That note is important to us: it tells your family most of the cat's likes and dislikes, which shortens the time it needs to settle in. Cats hate being moved, so give your new companion time, a quiet corner and patience. Many of our cats have learned that trust comes slowly — and it's worth the wait.
What the association covers
Your adoption and donations fund real, itemised care. These are the costs we cover for our cats:

| Blood test (FeLV / FIV) | €40 |

If you can't adopt right now, you can still help: sponsor a cat on Patreon or make a one-off donation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I adopt a cat from Spain if I live in Germany or elsewhere in Europe?
Yes. Mumcatorg rehomes cats in Spain and abroad. Max, a six-year-old tabby, travelled to his new home in Germany in October 2023. Before a cat travels we arrange its EU pet passport and the rabies vaccine.
Are the cats healthy?
Every cat is tested (including FeLV and FIV), vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and has a health booklet. Cats older than six months are spayed or neutered. We share their complete health history with you, including any virus found during their exams or in their siblings.
Can I adopt an FIV-positive cat?
Yes. Max was found to be FIV-positive during his preparation for adoption. His adopter didn't change her mind: we did further tests, a dental clean and a course of antibiotics and vitamins, and he travelled to Germany as planned.
What do I receive with my cat?
An up-to-date passport and a behavioural note describing the cat's likes and dislikes, so your family can shorten the time it needs to settle in.
How long does the process take?
It depends on the cat. Max was adopted in September 2023 and was ready for his trip on 13 October — about a month to prepare everything.
Why adopt a street cat rather than buy one?
Because each adoption changes two lives: the cat you take home, and the next one who can take its place and be removed from the street.
