cats in transition

About Mumcatorg

A Spanish non-profit cat rescue, dedicated to giving a chance to the so-called unadoptable.

how it started

The story behind

It all started in 2011, in the most unpredictable way, when I — Dalia, catmom and your writer — moved to Spain. I had new hosts the moment I moved into a holiday apartment with my two kitties, Bagheera and Lilith.

Back then I knew so little about the reality of street cats. I was overwhelmed and not ready at all. Many moves and many cats later, I always thought I would one day return to a normal life. Meanwhile, I did my best with my big feline family.

But on my own, the battle was too much strain. At the beginning of 2022, with the help of family and close friends, we decided that to do a really good, professional job, Mumcatorg had to become a legal association.

People who rescue often reach a point where they need rescuing themselves. Becoming legal was a step towards getting support — and with it comes respect, people who listen, and legal status for otherwise unrecognised work. We believe rescuing cats can be done without putting the rescuer's mental, physical and financial health at stake.

our method

Trust, at the cat's pace

Time

The cat usually knows us and has watched us for a good while before it starts staying longer. We let it set the pace, the distance and the conditions it feels at ease with.

TNR

Trap, neuter, return is carried out if not already done. After the fright, cats usually reappear and go back to their usual activities. Fewer hormones mean fewer territorial fights and a more settled cat.

Joining us

When a cat really decides to join us, it gets microchipped and vaccinated. That's when he or she officially becomes part of Mumcatorg.
